On occasion many people inquire as to why I write this nonsense. I myself have asked that question to myself many times as well.
At first I thought it was out of boredom. You know how it goes if you’re retired and live with a cat lady whose sole enjoyment in life is looking at cat photos on Facebook. That, and watching mindless TV. As I like to call it.
BUT…..I recently came across two quotes by prominent celebrities that kinda of nailed it down for me.
One was by actor Ben Stiller who said, “Laughter relieves the pain of life.”
The other by comedienne Carol Burnett when asked how she wanted to be remembered: “That I made somebody laugh when they needed it. That at one point, when they needed it, that I made them forget – even if is just for 10 seconds – that they were hurting.”
Yes, there are many times I myself need a good laugh as well, and actually get one while writing this stuff. As well as having many a down moment when I just want to scrap this entire blog. It’s the nature of the beast when you try to write humor. Any humor writer or comedian will attest to that fact.
It’s far easier for me to write humor then say a comedian, stand up comedy performer, or, as in my case many eons ago, on the air as a disc jockey.
BUT….sometimes events in your own life have to take a back seat while you’re performing. You may have had a bad day, but still have to make people laugh. Hence why so many comedians either have breakdowns or, as in the case of the late Robin Williams, take their own lives. Reality catches up to them and they are unable to cope.
In my case, it’s much easier not to fall into that deep dark hole. Much easier since I cut back on posting every day. If “I” have a bad day due to circumstances out of my control, and I do not feel I can write a humor blog, I don’t. Unlike popular celebrities who still have to perform, because, as the old saying goes, “the show must go on.”
I personally think all of us tend to look at entertainers who make us laugh as void of any sadness or depression in their lives. But they are human just like the rest of us. What affects you and I also affects them as well, regardless of their stature, popularity, followers, or the monetary compensation.
I just thought I’d pass this on to all of you today so that you would have a better insight as to why a lot of us bloggers, myself included, take the time to post our feelings, our poetry, photos, insights, commentary, and, in my case, nonsense.
Again, as Ben Stiller said, “Laughter relieves the pain of life.”
Hope I am able to do that for some, if not all of you.
If not, take two aspirin and call me in the morning.
