When I first saw that headline on the Internet I thought to myself, “Oh joy, a wrestling match between Miley Cyrus and Annie Lennox. (Eurythmics) Nothing like watching two woman in a catfight.
Alas, it was just Lennox making a comment indirectly about Miley Cyrus, linking her music to pornography with all that “twerking-tongue sticking out-gyrating-grab crotching-I got an itch on my butt type stuff.”
But, that said, Elvis, at least to all the young girls who crooned over him, did not, I think, ever grab his crotch or twerked any of his band members.
Here’s what Lennox had to say about today’s music, carefully avoiding mentioning Cyrus:
“I have to say that I’m disturbed and dismayed by the recent spate of overtly sexualized performances and videos. You know the ones I’m talking about,” Lennox wrote. “It seems obvious that certain record companies are peddling highly styled pornography with musical accompaniment. As if the tidal wave of sexualized imagery wasn’t already bombarding impressionable young girls enough…It’s a glorified and monetized form of self harm.”
Which immediately reminded me of some lyrics from a Billy Joel song, “You May Be Right.”
“Well, you may be right
I may be crazy
But it just might be a lunatic you’re looking for
Turn out the light
Don’t try to save me
Well you may be wrong for all I know
But you may be right”
Now although I DO tend to agree that Miley’s “twerking” and “crotch grabbing” and “tongue wagging” is kind of suggestive, which means that Lennox does have somewhat of a point. Which echos Joel’s song, “But you may be right.” Meaning of course, that Lennox MAY be right. But this sort of stuff has been going on within the music industry for decades.
Although most of the suggestive stuff and lyrics usually were sung by artists who were out of the puberty stage, unlike Cyrus.
So I decided to enlighten some of you who may be completely oblivious to WTF I’m talking about with a few sexually suggestive songs and lyrics.
My all time sexually suggestive song is one recorded by “Sylvia” formerly of the singing duo “Mickey and Sylvia” who had a huge hit with the song, “Love Is Strange.” I still get all turned on listening to the final few minutes of the song, “Pillow Talk” when Sylvia is moaning and panting and softly cries out, “Oh My God.”
(sorry, I just listened to it again and I had to take a quick cold shower)
Now can you imagine Cyrus doing that song? Yeah right.
If I heard her singing that song I’d be thinking she’s having a severe case of acid indigestion.
Come to think of it, I’d love to hear Cyrus attempt to do this next one by Donna Summer, “Love To Love You Baby.” Somehow I just can’t imagine her pulling it off like Summer did. It would be like listening to someone scratch their fingernails over a blackboard.
(oops….sorry….had to take another cold shower after listening to this one too)
Of course there are many other songs that the music industry Lennox is talking about which could be classified as,”highly styled pornography with musical accompaniment.” This of course depends on how those videos are presented and who the artist is.
“I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones wasn’t one of those suggestive videos, but the lyrics sure as hell were. Same with Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” or the Pointer Sisters with, “Slow Hand.” The list is endless.
I guess Lennox feels as I do that watching Cyrus attempt to be sexual with a music video is like watching that kid from “Two and a Half Men,” Angus T. Jones do a rendition of Clarence Carter’s, “Strokin’.”
(um…..damn…..ok….I’ll hold off on the cold shower this time)
So I’m of the opinion that Lennox thinkith as I do. Which is YES, the music industry knows sex sells. As do I, when I write about sex. But, I think she’s a bit upset at Cyrus attempting to cash in on all this sex stuff as a way to boost her popularity when, as I stated earlier, and in a few of my other blogs, Cyrus is NOT sexy. At least not to me.
Maybe to 1,000,000 adolescents still playing with themselves under the bedroom covers at night, but certainly not to anyone with an adult brain.
Now look at this pic of Cyrus in comparison to one of Katy Perry and YOU tell me which one screams sexuality.
If you chose Cyrus, better hope your mother doesn’t catch you under those covers doing what you’re doing at night.
Now scuse me again. I just came across this photo of Britney Spears and I’m NOT taking another cold shower this time….heh, heh.
“Oh honeeeeeeeeee! Put on that “Bolero” music CD.
