If you’re a rock and roll nut you may remember that great recording artist from the 50′s and 60′s, “Bo Diddley.” He recorded such memorable tunes as, “Hey Bo Diddley,” “I’m A Man,” and “Say Man.” Unfortunately, Bo is no longer with us, having gone to that great place all dearly departed rock and roll stars eventually go to………oldies radio.
But….that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten. Not by a long shot. Whatever a long shot is….a term used in horse racing would be my guess.
Nope. Memories of Bo Diddley came to mind when Senator Alan Simpson (R-Wyo) had his say on the crop of Republicans who are thinking about mounting women…um….no, that’s not right….it’s thinking about mounting campaigns for the Presidency.
Hmmmmm………wait…..I think I was correct. He was talking about presidential contenders mounting women.
Simpson made an appearance on MSNBC’s “Hardball” this past Monday and was asked his assessment of the emerging GOP field by anchor Chris Matthews.
For those of you not familiar with MSNBC, it stands for, “Many Stupid News Broadcasts.” Just thought I’d clear that up for ya.
Anyhow, Simpson touched on many hot potato issues such as gay rights, and lefts I suppose, the “don’t ask, don’t tell policy,” which is NOT an insurance policy that has a clause in it that says if you’re in an accident, don’t ask and don’t tell. And of course, the really hot tamale, “abortion.”
But that’s not what made the headlines. Nope. It was remembering Bo Diddley. As far as I can determine. Perhaps it was unintentional, but there it was for all to hear.
Simpson was responding to a quote from former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum back in 2003 AD, comments which have recently resurfaced, at which time he said, with regard to homosexuality:
“If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual (gay) sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything.”
Geez….the Supreme Court said all that! I might have missed all those rulings. Might have been bowling night or something.
So, when this was brought up on the show, Simpson responded saying that….
“That’s the kind of guys that are going to be on my ticket, you know, makes you sort out hard what Reagan said, you know, “stick with your folks.” “But I’m not sticking with people who are homophobic, anti-women, you know, moral values while you’re out “diddling” your secretary while you’re giving a speech on moral values. Come on, get off of it.”
See……he made reference to Bo Diddley with regard to diddling secretaries, which Bo may have done at one time during his heyday, although I do not think Bo was homophobic. He did however do an awful lot of diddling, but Simpson did not mention if Bo specifically diddled anyone in Simpson’s own past campaigns or if perhaps Bo just diddled in the privacy of his own home…….strumming all alone with his guitar in a dimly lit room. Which we have all done, at least us guys, at some point in our lives….usually as teenagers.
Incidentally, the definition of “diddle” or “diddling” is, one of two, your choice:
1. To cheat. To dawdle. To Pass time idly. 2. To jerk up and down, back and forth.
Hmmmmmmmmm……………….Ok, I’ll take number 2, considering Simpson was referring to “diddling” one’s secretary. Or, if one was perhaps diddling alone while thinking of one’s secretary. I would think that in either case, it’s still considered diddling.
So, in conclusion, we can all just assume that Senator Simpson had Bo Diddly in mind when he spoke of diddling. After all, he IS old enough to remember Bo Diddley, and may have, at some point, diddled himself. And, considering his age, 80, retired, and most likely without a secretary, may be diddling as we speak…or write.
Hey Bo Diddley….ba-da-boom-ba-da-bing!

So, diddle me this:
Is it true that Bo Diddley (shown squatting above) coined the term, “diddly squat?”
as in:
Confucius say, “Man who diddle secretary do diddly squat?”
