I think by now we’ve all seen the promos for the new movie “Kick Ass” during the gazillion commercial breaks on television. I must admit that it kinda looks like a funny movie. However, the critics are split on their opinions of the flick. It’s kinda like Democrats, Republicans, Independents and Tea Baggers all watching the same movie but having different opinions. So let’s take a look at some of their comments.
And you all know how I feel about movie critics. The same way I feel about umpires, refs, the IRS and ex wives.
First of all the title of the movie,”Kick Ass” has drawn the usual controversy. I’m not sure if it’s the word “kick” or “ass” that’s stirring up the populus either. Maybe it should have been titled, “Kick Behind” or “Kick Rear” or maybe even “Kick Posterior.” Might have worked for those of you that are politically correct sensitive individuals. I feel your pain.
Roger Ebert, one of the movie critics, called the movie, “reprehensible.” Which means deserving blame or censure according to my handy pocket dictionary. Just what we all need, more censure. I think George Carlin just rolled over in his grave once again.
Michael Phillips, another movie critic, said that he, “started hating this movie around the midpoint” and commented on the violence by calling it, “stupidly relentless.” Hmmm, could his reaction be compared to some of those video games available to kids as well? I must be mistaken, there really are no violent video games for kids.
On the other side of the argument, Owen Gleiberman, yes, another movie critic, rated the film as a “B+” and described it as “an enjoyably supercharged and ultraviolent teen-rebel-comic book fantasy.” HUH!
Yet another movie critic, John DeFore said that he had a good time watching the movie and called it a “funny, unexpectedly violent romp.” Sounds like John’s description is from a porno movie…..wonder if he went into the wrong movie by mistake.
All in all, most of the critics feel that the movie is not for kids. It “is” rated “R” which should keep some parents from letting their kids see the movie…………like that’s gonna stop them. But personally I don’t think the world will come to an end if they actually manage to get into a movie theatre and see it.
As for us adults. Well that’s a different story. People will be up in arms, the politically correct crowd will be burning “Kick Ass” movie posters in the streets. Nicholas Cage, one of the movie’s stars, will be labeled as contributing to corruption our children’s morals. Hannibal Lector will seem like a mild version of Juila Child when compared to the characters in “Kick Ass.” Yep, it’s all coming down the pike.
What all of us have to do if we want to simply ignore those critics and judge the movie ourselves is to actually go and see it and make up our own independent critic free minds.
In other words……………….when it comes to opinions of the critics………….
“KICK ASS.”
